A Business Built on
Putting Family First.
Doug Terrell grew up in Muncie, Indiana, without much money, but with a work ethic that people noticed. One of those people was Bill Gruppe, who met Doug while he was working at Bill’s gas station. Bill saw something in him: grit, humility, and a willingness to do whatever needed to be done. He believed in Doug enough to help him start his first business, a car wash in Muncie.
That first opportunity became the beginning of a lifelong partnership. In 1977, Doug and Bill opened McQuik’s Oil & Lube, one of the first drive-through oil change shops in the country. The idea was simple: pull in, stay in your car, get your oil changed, and get back on the road. At the time, most people either changed their own oil in the driveway or waited for hours at a dealership. Plenty of people told them, “Nobody’s going to pay you to do their oil change.”
Doug and Bill believed otherwise. They believed people’s time mattered. They believed customers deserved to be treated well. And they were right. McQuik’s grew to more than 150 stores across the Midwest before Quaker State Oil Company purchased the business in the 1980s and converted the stores into the green Q Lubes many Hoosiers still remember.
Doug stayed on to help run Q Lube’s national operation, but eventually the company wanted him to move to Texas. He said no. His children were in school. Indiana was home. And for Doug, family came first.
When Shell, which owns Pennzoil and Jiffy Lube, later brought the Q Lube stores into the Jiffy Lube family, Doug saw a chance to come home to the work he loved. In 1999, the Terrell family bought back some of their original Indiana stores and started again as the Terrell Group. Doug’s wife, Jean, left her nursing career to help run the family business, and Doug’s two brothers, his mom, and his dad all helped run stores along the way. Together, the family spent the next two decades serving Indiana drivers in towns like New Castle, Muncie, Kokomo, Warsaw, Marion, and Goshen.
Doug has always believed that “any shop can change your oil — it’s how you treat your customers that keeps them coming back.” That belief still guides us today.
In 2018, Doug began passing the business to the next generation. His son Chad had already spent years in the company, leading internal construction projects and helping care for the stores from the ground up. His son-in-law, EJ Williams, left the engineering and technology world — including roles with Tesla Motors and Mark Cuban Companies — to help lead and grow the family business. Today, as Indiana Auto Care, we are honored to continue the work Doug started nearly 50 years ago.
We are still a family business. We still believe in putting people first. And we believe that means more than changing oil. Through our Drive to Do More mission, we have donated more than $100,000 in oil change vouchers to local nonprofits and community organizations.
Doug’s decision years ago to stay in Indiana and put his family first is the reason Indiana Auto Care exists today. It is also the reason we try to treat every customer and every team member like more than a transaction. We are proud to be the hometown, family-first choice for your oil change.

Doug opened the first McQuik’s in Muncie, Indiana, back in 1977, helping create the drive-through oil change model from the ground up. With his partner, Bill Gruppe, McQuik’s expanded to 150 locations across the midwest in the 1980’s. Family has always been important to Doug. His mother and two brothers all ran oil change shops of their own across Warsaw, Marion, and Muncie. Thanks to Doug, Indiana Auto Care is truly a family business.
CHAD TERRELL
FACILITIES & CONSTRUCTION
As it goes in most family businesses, Doug’s son grew up in the business. He started as a lube technician at 13-years-old, helping service vehicles at his father’s Muncie store. Today, Chad oversees all facility maintenance, store remodels, and various construction projects for the company. Thanks to Chad, Indiana Auto Care has strong capabilities in store maintenance and building new stores.

FAMILY OWNERSHIP
EJ joined the family through marriage to Rachel Terrell (daughter of Doug). With a background in tech startups, he brings a new entrepreneurial energy to the organization. As President, EJ grew the company from 12 stores to 23 in just a few years. He leads with passion and determination, while preserving the company values of being Fast, Friendly, and Reliable.
